In 1796 brothers Robert & John Cockburn opened for business, their stock & trade: the world’s finest wines & spirits. Naturally, Leith was the perfect location, being both a bustling port, and full of people who absolutely LOVE a bevy. Thus, history lovers, COCKBURNS of LEITH was born.
Miraculously, more than two centuries later, this renowned wine merchant is still thriving, has now relocated to the New Town, and currently faces its greatest challenge to date: having the Social Bitches as guests.
For you see, adoring both a ye olde tale AND public intoxication, we happily find ourselves attending the exciting launch of the brand new Cockburn’s of Leith wine shop on Frederick Street.
The party itself is at the Queen’s Arms across the way, where we’re joined by the gorgeous Adele aka Tartanspoonblog [ who we’re merrily leading astray ] and 200 other incredibly thirsty folk, who it seems will gladly push one to the ground in order to have first dibs on the canapés.
Fortunately, we are perfectly positioned to monopolise both the food, and the ample supply of fizz. HUZZAH! Though eventually we find ourselves curious re: the actual shop, decide to stumble across the street, and drunkenly investigate.
To our delight, there’s even more free wine for us to imbibe – DOUBLE HUZZAH!! – and the selection is fabulous, including a lush vinho verde we desperately need a case of [ perhaps at a cheeky discount, hint hint ]
Though right now our mission is clear, drink as much wine – ooh, and drams of whisky – as humanly possible, until the wonderfully gregarious staff members have no choice but to turf us out on the cobbles.
But even post-ejection these bitches definitely plan on returning. There’s Christmas stockpiling to do, in-store tastings, and a major wine tasting events-a-go-go.
So as we get ready to shout rather loudly across the store – “YES WE’D LOVE TO TRY THE MALBEC” – we must first say a massive thank you to Cockburns for the wonderful hospitality, and raise our glasses to the next two centuries!
